Month of Photography Asia is the most leading photography event in Singapore. This exhibition is held every year with a theme around which the festival curates. It was initially established in the year 2002. It has been a successful event since then and helps in promoting photography as a form of art and as a creative and upcoming industry. It’s a place where new talents are born and renowned persons’ works are exhibited.
The theme for 2011 was to signify the relationship between photography and memory. The month of photography Asia includes some of the best international, regional and local photographers to prosper the theme. Photographs of different views, scopes, and angles are presented with different notions and captions. The festival has always been a combination of group shows and solo shows. The photographs show off the individual difference of each photographer. Every photograph conveys a meaningful message in its very own way.
Every year the exhibition is based on a particular theme, where the exhibitors have a wide selection related to a broad and deep theme. The themes “Pop Culture” in 2004, “Le Regard Documentaire” in 2006, “Wonderings” in 2007, “Still/Moving: Photography and Cinema” in 2008, “Engaging Asia” in 2009, and “Praxis” in 2010 were used in the past years to base the exhibition. “Requiem” was organized to celebrate the photographers who died during the Indo- china and Vietnam Wars.
The main purpose of this exhibition is to promote art and photography in Singapore and Southeast Asia. 2011’s theme ‘Memory’ shows how events are recounted in the perception of subjectivity that is captured through images. The images exhibited represent human feelings and complex situations in a changing, obnoxious world. ‘Memory’ featured over 250 photographs from photographers all around Asia like American Robert Capa and Sean Flynn, British Larry Burrows, Japanese Kyoichi Sawada, French Gilles Caron Henri Huet, Charles Chellapah, Sam Kai Faye and Terry Khoo.
