Often referred to as the “Durian” by locals due to the resemblance of the Esplanade’s structure to the popular fruit – it is the creative hub of Singapore. One of the famous opera houses in the East. There are a number of top-notch performances throughout the year at the theatres.

The Esplanade leaves visitors in awe as they gawk at the large visual art display or the performances. It is not a single performance venue but there are several venues within the Esplanade. A 1600 capacity concert hall, a 2000 seat theatre and several other intimate venues, Esplanade has hosted many high profile performances, with Les Misérables being a notable one.

Apart from the various performances that span across different cultures and genres, there are also free programmes for music, dance and theatre. One can also watch a play inspired by Singapore Chinese Theatre Kuo Pao Kun or a concert of The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Updates about upcoming events are found in various magazines, sites and portals as well as blogs such as My Entertainment Hub.

The architectural structure of the Esplanade is worth learning about. Hence visitors are given a chance to learn and enjoy a walk around the structure. One can discover the method taken in order to turn the Concert Hall in to either a cathedral or a small room – depending on the performance. Visitors will also learn how both the theatre and concert hall has an ability to completely block all noise and vibration from outside.

The iconic cladding (durian spikes) also has a reason for being there, learn how they allow the building to have a clear facade and at the same time serve as a means of blocking out the bright sunlight. There is also 2 hour long tours. They help one understand about the acoustics of the venue, the architectural importance and history as well as the contribution to the Singaporean arts and culture.
