The Old Ford Motor Factory is designed much like a war memorial dedicated to the bygone era of Singapore. The country was the first of the Ford car plants in Southeast Asia and represented the imperial power of England during the time. However, when the Second World War broke out the nation yielded and the Ford factory was the site of British surrender to the Japanese.
At present the construction of the Old Ford factory takes you back to what Singapore was like in the past. You start off the journey by walking through a reconstructed tunnel that displays photographs and newspaper clippings which capture the final days in Singapore before the invasion of Japan. This is not one of those boring museums that you would rush through; the maps, the artefacts and the interesting snippets of information on the floor and the ceiling of the tunnel are quite intriguing.
The boardroom of the motor factory is the place where the British surrendered to the Japanese, this room has been carefully preserved and definitely something worth looking at. Even the clock at the boardroom is set to the time of the surrender and the map of Malaya (pre-Singapore) is hung up in the room. If you do not have the time to read through all of the historical details on display, it is best to check out the audio-visual theatre at the museum. The seating capacity for the theatre is for over 70 people and you should be able to grab a seat. There are several documentaries that are screened at the theatre and these documentaries highlight the different historical aspects of life in the country under the Japanese regime.
Be sure to check out the beautiful garden area right behind the exhibition gallery. During WW II sugarcane, bananas and tapioca were grown in the region. The garden area is designed like one of the old war plantations, it has a wooden walkway and some interesting information about plant life is provided. Singapore is a small country, but there is so much to do. So it’s really important that visitors pay attention to the location of the hotels in Singapore. Amongst the wide range of Singapore hotels there is one that you should check out, that is Millennium and Copthorne Hotels Singapore. It is close to many of the city’s attractions and the combination of luxury and comfort is something to look forward to.
