Nan Lian Garden is a beautifully designed Chinese garden. It opened to the public in 2006. Spanning over three hectares, the garden is part of the Chi Lin Nunnery complex. The garden features classical Tang Dynasty landscaping with rocks, water, and plants. Plus, the architectural elements you see here speak of a time that’s now lost.

Its dedication to the ancient Tang Dynasty style is what makes Nan Lian Garden special. Some of the main highlights include a golden pavilion, a blue pond with a waterfall, a bonsai garden, and a traditional tea house. Next to it, the Chi Lin Nunnery boasts remarkable wooden architecture and landscaped areas.
Layout
The garden is arranged in a circular path that lets you easily explore all the main attractions. The pavilions, the ponds, and the bridges are all laid out in a logical sequence, which ensures you don’t miss out on anything.
Location
It sits in the bustling area of Kowloon, but it offers a breather from the daily grind. Although it’s flanked by skyscrapers, the garden is a peaceful spot in the city. Just 15 minutes from Nan Lian Garden is Cosmo Hotel Hong Kong, one of the Wan Chai hotels in Hong Kong.

Nan Lian Garden is easy to reach by public transport. Take the MTR to Diamond Hill Station, and from there, it’s only a short walk to the garden.
Things to Know Before Visiting
Here are some things to keep in mind before you make your visit:
- Entrance is free, and the garden is open from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily.
- Inside the garden, smoking, pets, and outside food and drinks aren’t allowed, but don’t hesitate to bring a bottle of water to keep yourself hydrated.
- It’s a great spot for photos, but don’t interfere with other visitors.
- Plan to spend around an hour here, but you might need more time if you want to see everything.
