Going back more than 150 years, Singapore’s Botanic Garden not only thrills visitors with its beautifully planted and landscaped spaces but is linked with many important agricultural and horticultural landmarks such as the propagation of the rubber plant in South East Asia, developing orchid breeding and hybridization and most importantly the greening of Singapore.
The centre piece of the Garden is most certainly its National Orchid Garden, occupying a 3 ha undulating site where more than 1,000 species and 2,000 hybrid orchids are displayed under varying environmental conditions. The Orchidarium houses natural species in a tropical environment while the Mist House showcases a collection of fragrant orchids and hybrids in all the colours of the rainbow. The Bromeliad House nearby displays a unique and thriving collection that was started in 1994 and the Cool House showcases a collection of orchids found only in tropical highland environments. In a separate area are specially bred orchids named for VIP visitors. Other areas of interest include a six ha tropical rainforest, a lush 9.9 ha evolution garden in the Central Core area with giant pre historic ferns and mosses, a Ginger Garden devoted to plants of the Zingiberaceae family, a Children’s Garden in the northern end named after a benefactor, a heritage tree walk, palm valley with its sprawling green lawns which is a popular picnic spot and where free musical performances are held and a sun garden. Three lakes surrounded by lush tropical greenery, waterfalls, numerous other water features and interesting garden sculptures add to the attractions. Offices, research facilities and classrooms of the Botany Centre are located in the Tanglin Core area where Singapore’s first green roof with plants sprouting on it can be seen. Expansion plans include a Healing Garden, Fragrant Garden, Terrace Garden and Foliage Valley. Not only is the garden appreciated for its beauty and green spaces but as a place where families can come together to relax, jog, practice Tai Chi or walk the dog. As this is the only botanic garden in the world to be open from 5 am till mid night on a daily basis, visitors can enjoy the garden at almost any time of day.
