Asian Civilization Museum

where Asian culture has a home

With Singapore being the melting pot of cultures – the Asian Civilization Museum is perhaps the best place to gain an insight into its many ethnicities as it contains a wealth of knowledge.

The Asian Civilization Museum offers visitors an integrated view of Asian cultures and information on the beginnings of their civilizations. The museum offers such a broad perspective of cultures that exist in the region; it attracts many tourists to its door.

One of the main aims of the museum is to support the propagation and also an appreciation for the cultures that have each contributed in their own way to creating a unique backdrop for Singapore’s ethnic society to develop and grow in unity.

The museum recognises the different ethnicities that have invested their lives into making Singapore so ethnically diverse. The country’s forefathers have flocked from various parts of Asia intermittently throughout the last 200 years and as such the museum turns its spotlight on artifacts of different groups from Asia.

Initially the museum was located at Armenian Street, where virtually 80 percent of the museum was focused on China’s civilization. It was only later on that artifacts from the Peranakan culture came into being as part of the museums exhibits, which visitors will find today. This collection of exhibits offers jewellery, porcelain and even bits of silver on display. Among this collection, visitors will find that a recreated altar from one of the richest Peranakan homes in Singapore is the highlight of this collection.

The Asian Civilization Museum changed its venue in 2003 and visitors will find it at Empress Place now. This new location provides more space for the exhibits which have been displayed across an average of 14,000 square metres. Here over 1,000 artifacts are on display.

After spending an afternoon wandering about the museum what would be ideal is some pampering at hotel providing luxury accommodation in Singapore. One such hotel is the Raffles Hotel, Singapore which is a world famous for being a high end luxury hotel in Singapore.
