You’ll never get weary of Singapore’s vivacity. The city is a maze of endless attractions to your senses. However, if you find yourself looking for a change of pace, you can always wander over to Singapore’s many nature parks that offer locals a welcoming respite from the city life and offer its visitors an acquaintance with the flora and fauna of Singapore’s urban jungle.
In the central region’s Bukit Merah Planning Area stands Mount Faber overlooking the Telok Blangah area, and the western parts of the Central Area. Standing at 106 meters, it is one of the tallest hills in Singapore. Also one of the oldest parks in Singapore, the park consists of secondary rainforest whose undergrowth is surprisingly dense. The Mount was originally known as Telok Blangah Hill but renamed after Captain Charles Edward Faber, who engineered the road which runs to the top of the hill.
A panoramic view of Singapore can be observed from the many lookout points. When you get to the top of Upper Faber Point, you may observe a wonderful mural depicting scenes of local history, as well as the diminutive sculpture of Singapore city’s mascot, the Merlion, and an original and intriguing piece of a lit up, compass-like structure is found on the floor. Visitors will also stumble upon a garden with life-sized chess pieces, an exercise garden, foot reflexology facility, a bird cage trellis and a souvenir kiosk. For convenience of visitors, Mount Faber also has a shelter, many tables, chairs, restrooms and benches for relaxation.
The park is accessible by road but has many scenic footpaths. You can follow the Marang trail to Mount Faber, which has many steps which can be accessed from the HarbourFront MRT D Exit/Entrance. The trail will offer you some spectacular views of the canopy of Mount Faber and even of the cable cars as they pass by. Visitors can easily get to Mount Faber by coach, subway or taxi. Car parks and Coach parks are available in the area.
From the park, you can take a cable car to Sentosa Island or just to enjoy the panoramic view of the southern part of Singapore and the southern islands. The cable car station to Sentosa is called The Jewel Box and is complete with restaurants and toilets. From Faber you can also go see Henderson Waves which is Singapore’s highest pedestrian bridge and is an impressive monument. Telok Blangah Hill Park is nearby as is the Pasir Panjang Tamil Methodist Church.
Mount Faber is idyllic for bird-watching, photography and nature walks and treks. It also offers a great spot for dining with several restaurants, cafes and food outlets offering delectable Singaporean cuisine and more. The Altivo Bar, The Jewel Box, Glass Bar, Faber Hill Bistro, and Faber Rock are some of the frequently patronized. You can even try sky dining on the cable cars which goes from Mount Faber to Sentosa.
