The renowned Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore has acquired renown as the pioneering institution in the region to provide a widespread yet integrated view of the numerous and fascinating civilisations that can be found in the area of Asia. As befitting its status amongst the National Museums of Singapore, the institution aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the culturally rich elements which make up Singapore’s vibrant multi-ethnic heritage.
Whilst the majority of the forefathers of Singapore settled in the city-state during the last two centuries, the diverse cultures of these different peoples are naturally far older. This perspective of the history of Singapore is the main focus of the museum. Therefore the establishment’s collection focuses primarily on the cultures of these ancestors who arrived from Southeast Asia, China, as well as South Asia and West Asia.
The first premise’s of the institution was located at Armenian Street and was opened in April 1997. At the time of its inception the museum largely featured Chinese civilisations. Later its focus shifted to Peranakan culture, with attractive displays of Peranakan porcelain, silver and jewellery as well as a replica of a traditional altar from one of Singapore’s hereditary mansions. Later these premises were developed into a special Peranakan Museum.
Today the flagship premises of the ACM are located at Empress Place and opened its doors to the public in March 2003. Located at the freshly refurbished Empress Place Building, it features no less than 11 galleries showcasing more than 1300 items from the civilizations which contributed to the state’s rich cultural heritage. These artefacts include articles inherited from the significant collections of the former Raffles Museum as well as an assortment of newly obtained acquisitions.
